Referencing is an important aspect of all academic work. You must reference your sources of information and acknowledge when you borrow ideas, information or direct citations from other people's work, in order to avoid plagiarism.

There are three major referencing styles. They are the American Psychological Association (APA) Style, the Modern Language Association (MLA) Style, and the Chicago Style. Each style was developed to ensure that writers conform to a standard way of writing, quoting and referencing.

Before you begin your paper, it is always wise to consult with your tutor and course materials to find out what is the preferred style of referencing. If no preference is given, students should choose one of the referencing styles outlined here and be consistent and accurate in the application of that one style.
