There is no set definition of this term. However at AU, Environmental Studies refers to an interdisciplinary approach to the study of human interactions with the environment. As such, Environmental Studies is differentiated from Environmental Science, in that Environmental Studies includes science as well as social science and humanities courses and approaches, rather than exclusively a science-based examination of the environment. As well, the environment we examine is not exclusively the natural environment, but also includes study of built and imagined environments.
All Athabasca University Environmental Studies (ENVS) courses are social science credits.
What degrees are offered in Environmental Studies?
Athabasca University does not yet offer degree options in Environmental Studies, but hopes to do so in the near future. However, there are a number of environmental courses open that can be taken for credit towards degrees at AU and may be accepted toward degrees or diplomas at other institutions. Check with your parent institution to check that the course credits will satisfy your educational needs.
